Divergent Thinking

As we enter May, the current pandemic that we are fighting has started to become even more bizarre and surreal. Colleges and universities are closed and conducting online classes, curfews and lockdowns have been put into place and our favorite restaurants and stores are no longer safe. While we sit comfortable and safe at home, healthcare workers are continuing to battle this invisible opponent every day, on the front lines of the medical field. Although, this time is marked by closures and isolation, many stores and restaurants in local communities are finding ways to scaffold support for our nation’s essential workers. Through the use of technology, creativity, and kindness these supports are thriving.

In my small town of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, folks in the community have been busy thinking outside the box on how we can be most helpful to essential workers. A local restaurant, "The Rising Sun Inn", has decided to give back to our essential workers and families in need, by establishing a weekly meal distribution. Families, health care workers, or anyone who is experiencing hardship during this time, can "drive through" the Rising Sun Inn and pick up hearty, hand packed meals. Last weeks meal distribution was a success, handing out every meal in less than one hour. That is over 400 meals! I feel grateful to be apart of a community that is so adamant and passionate about helping others during these uncertain times. Since the Rising Sun's meal distribution has been such a success, countless other local businesses and organizations in the community have joined the movement as sponsors. Bergey's Auto Group, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Clemens Food Group, along with a number if others who have provided financial assistance and time. Not only have small communities been working together during this pandemic, but celebrities and influencers have also been joining forces to find new and creative ways to support those in need.

Celebrity couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have partnered with the Nocking Point wine company to create a special quarantine wine. The idea behind this special wine is that 100% of the profits will be donated to charities and organizations assisting in the fight of the COVID-19 pandemic. What makes this wine so different and special is that ALL of the profits are being used to make positive things happen. Mila designed the bottle to be more enticing by using an interactive label, in which you can write a message to a friend that you are sharing the bottle with, family members around the table, or even yourself on a night in. You can purchase Mila and Ashtons wine on the Nocking Points website, as well as explore the charities that they have partnered with. I don't know about you, but I think its time to order some Official Quarantine Wine

My Online Footprint

As a rising senior in college, I am often quite concerned and focused on how my online presence appears to my friends, family, and especially future employers. As an avid user of social media platforms, I make sure that the content I post is age appropriate and nothing that could possibly get me in trouble or risk future opportunities. Conveniently enough, the sorority that I am a member of at High Point University has rules that we must follow when posting on social media. Having this rule in place has definitely made me more aware of the type of pictures I post. When searching for myself online, the first result that comes up is the link to my Facebook Page. My Facebook page is private, so those who follow the link can only see a brief portion of my profile. Therefore, those searching for me online would only be able to see my Facebook profile picture. Other things that I found when I was searching for myself on the internet was my name on some lacrosse rosters from freshman year o...

The Evolution of Communication Technology

As the popularity of streaming services continues to grow and revolutionize, less and less people are continuing to use cable providers. Why continue to pay hundreds of dollars each month for cable, when you can sign up for various streaming services at an extremely lower cost. Netflix is one of the most popular internet entertainment platforms used today, with over 167 million paid memberships. Interestingly enough, the idea of Netflix was created after owners Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph, became frustrated after being charged $40 for an overdue movie rental. The two created Netflix with the intention to run the business as an online-based DVD rental service, but later on developed the site into being solely subscription based. Today the site offers a wide range of movies. television shows, and new series created by Netflix. I think that streaming services are one of the most extraordinary ways that communication technology has changed and developed. With a few clicks of the re...

History & Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

After viewing the class video on the Supreme Court, I was able to gain an understanding of the ways in which our judicial system runs and operates in the United States. I now can appreciate the basics of our judicial system and recognize the particular way that justices must go about doing their jobs.  A portion of the video that caught my attention was several Chief Justices and law professor A.E. Dick Howard, discussing the way that the Constitution of the United States is neither a clear advantage nor a disadvantage to them when making decisions within the court. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy describes the idea as having an advantage that past justices did not. "We have 200 years of history, of detachment, in which we can see the folly of some ideas, the wisdom of others. So, the fact that we're interpreting a document that is 200 years old is not just a disadvantage. In a way, also an advantage". I agree with Justice Kennedy, because we can use previous ...
