Eight Values of Free Expression: Individual Self-Fulfillment

After becoming more familiar with the eight values of free expression, I felt a genuine connection with the value of individual self-fulfillment. It is strange to think about how our country and its people would function without the right to express themselves and be their own individual. It is a part of our nature to fulfill our hopes and desires. “In this way, self-fulfillment betokens a life well lived, a life that is deeply satisfying, fruitful, and worthwhile.” (Gewirth, Alan.) I believe that this is one of the most important values of free expression, because without it we would not hear opinions, provoking thoughts, or raise questions that make ourselves and others truly think. I have the ability to explain my ideas to you, because free speech and self-fulfillment allow me to.

Free speech grants us the capability to share our thoughts and beliefs with the world around us. Although, with the rise in use of social media platforms and online interfaces, people may feel less inclined to share their opinions, especially if they are speaking out against a group of firm believers in their vision. Forming a new opinion and straying against a group consensus is definitely not a comfortable call to action. I think that in our society today, it is becoming more difficult for individuals to represent themselves and their ideas in the way that they truly would like to.

On the other hand, I do think that there are people who prowl on internet sites and social media platforms with the sole intention to shoot down other people’s ideas and make them feel like their opinions have no value. This can be seen a lot on the platform of Twitter. Twitter is designed for users to share their thoughts in 280 characters or less. Celebrities, promoters, government officials, and thousands of everyday people use this app religiously. I find that Twitter is the easiest platforms to talk about your feelings and share your thoughts. With it being the easiest platform to do so, it comes along with a lot of fighting, hurt feelings, and confusion.

Overall, I find that one of the most important values of free expression is self-fulfillment. Humans are inclined to talk about how they feel and express their ideas to the world and those around them. As a matter of fact, we do this every day whether we recognize it or not. In my own opinion, keep sharing your beliefs and deliberations, as it is important to creating and being a happy and healthy, human.

My Online Footprint

As a rising senior in college, I am often quite concerned and focused on how my online presence appears to my friends, family, and especially future employers. As an avid user of social media platforms, I make sure that the content I post is age appropriate and nothing that could possibly get me in trouble or risk future opportunities. Conveniently enough, the sorority that I am a member of at High Point University has rules that we must follow when posting on social media. Having this rule in place has definitely made me more aware of the type of pictures I post. When searching for myself online, the first result that comes up is the link to my Facebook Page. My Facebook page is private, so those who follow the link can only see a brief portion of my profile. Therefore, those searching for me online would only be able to see my Facebook profile picture. Other things that I found when I was searching for myself on the internet was my name on some lacrosse rosters from freshman year o...

History & Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

After viewing the class video on the Supreme Court, I was able to gain an understanding of the ways in which our judicial system runs and operates in the United States. I now can appreciate the basics of our judicial system and recognize the particular way that justices must go about doing their jobs.  A portion of the video that caught my attention was several Chief Justices and law professor A.E. Dick Howard, discussing the way that the Constitution of the United States is neither a clear advantage nor a disadvantage to them when making decisions within the court. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy describes the idea as having an advantage that past justices did not. "We have 200 years of history, of detachment, in which we can see the folly of some ideas, the wisdom of others. So, the fact that we're interpreting a document that is 200 years old is not just a disadvantage. In a way, also an advantage". I agree with Justice Kennedy, because we can use previous ...

What The Heck is an Echo Chamber?

An echo chamber describes "an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect or reinforce their own." Echo chambers are responsible for creating misinformation, which can overshadow someones ability to accept new ideas or information. These environments can be dangerous and extremely difficult to break away from, especially with having the internet so easily accessible. With a few clicks, people have access to endless information solidifying their values and beliefs. People that seek out echo chambers are blinding themselves to other opinions and are subconsciously using this as a method for themselves to feel more secure about their stance on a certain topic. With the rise in popularity and usage of social media platforms, echo chambers have EVEN MORE of an online presence. In an draft paper written by Walter Quattrociocchi, Antonio Scala, and Cass Sunstein, these social scientists collected substantial evidence proving that Facebook tend...
