Emoji's...#TBT

Until this assignment, I had truly not thought about emoticons as anything other way than the little yellow faces smiling and laughing on my keyboard. When you really think about it, emoticons to are actually apart of the way that we communicate in everyday life. Whether it be to share our emotions, express our likes and dislikes, or simply use it as a quick way to response, they work.
If you are not familiar with using emoticons, they are a digital image/sticker that is used to show a feeling or thought.
The world in which we live todays has used and continues to use emoticons in their benefit. Emojis are able to convey likes and dislikes, emotions, interests, etc. In young adults, emojis are often time inserted into conversation when it is coming to an end or to show interest in the other individual.
How can they do all this? There are around 2,666 emojis that are sent around and used today. They are used in conversation, in captions of social media posts, and they are used to bring humor into a conversation.
In my opinion, I wish that there were either a smaller selection or that they were never created at all. I like to think that emojis are a way to escape conversation. If you do not know how to answer something or even if you do not want to answer something, an emoticon is thrown into a text stream. Though, it may all seem like fun and games, emojis can actually be considered a bad thing. Since being introduced, it has allowed people to become more reliable on small pictures expressing their thoughts, rather than actual words. It may sound crazy, but there are people out there who definitely send an emoji with every text they send and with every post that the publish.
With the rising usage of emojis, I can only help but wonder if they will take over real, written language.

My Online Footprint

As a rising senior in college, I am often quite concerned and focused on how my online presence appears to my friends, family, and especially future employers. As an avid user of social media platforms, I make sure that the content I post is age appropriate and nothing that could possibly get me in trouble or risk future opportunities. Conveniently enough, the sorority that I am a member of at High Point University has rules that we must follow when posting on social media. Having this rule in place has definitely made me more aware of the type of pictures I post. When searching for myself online, the first result that comes up is the link to my Facebook Page. My Facebook page is private, so those who follow the link can only see a brief portion of my profile. Therefore, those searching for me online would only be able to see my Facebook profile picture. Other things that I found when I was searching for myself on the internet was my name on some lacrosse rosters from freshman year o...

The Evolution of Communication Technology

As the popularity of streaming services continues to grow and revolutionize, less and less people are continuing to use cable providers. Why continue to pay hundreds of dollars each month for cable, when you can sign up for various streaming services at an extremely lower cost. Netflix is one of the most popular internet entertainment platforms used today, with over 167 million paid memberships. Interestingly enough, the idea of Netflix was created after owners Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph, became frustrated after being charged $40 for an overdue movie rental. The two created Netflix with the intention to run the business as an online-based DVD rental service, but later on developed the site into being solely subscription based. Today the site offers a wide range of movies. television shows, and new series created by Netflix. I think that streaming services are one of the most extraordinary ways that communication technology has changed and developed. With a few clicks of the re...

Diffusion of Innovation

Using the Com Tech Timeline was an innovative and interactive way to understand and further discuss the evolution of communication technology. Though, we covered technology dating back to 3500 BC, we stopped once we touched on inventions from 2007. With the rapid advancement of technology in the past 15 years, we could easily develop an entire timeline dedicated to communication technology from 2007-2020. One of the most popular forms of communication technology that has emerged in the past ten years are social media platforms. With a few clicks, social media platforms have made it remarkably easy to share photos, videos, "tweets", and endless information with people across the world. I think the use of social media has caught on as a commonly used form of communication technology, because it allows people to connect effortlessly, no matter the time or the place. I would say that in the past ten years, Instagram has gained an enormous amount of popularity amongst all gene...
